Answering the Call
Growing up in Central Texas, I've always admired the beauty of a farm from afar. From corn fields as far as the eye can see to sprawling hills full of roaming cattle, I've often found myself daydreaming about how nice it might be to own and operate a farm of my own one day.
However, with absolutely no knowledge of farming and a lifelong career dedicated to the construction industry, a daydream is as far as it ever went. I wasn't qualified in the least so I moved on with life as I knew it.
It's funny how our dreams can so often pursue us rather than us pursuing them. Although I didn't know it at the time, this dream planted itself right under my feet almost a decade ago. It came in the form of our land, a small ten acre parcel located just outside of Austin, Texas. My wife Michelle and I didn't set out with the intent to buy land that we could farm. We simply wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and live a quieter, slower life.
The first few years were the hardest of our lives. We grossly underestimated the costs associated with developing a completely raw piece of land into a homestead. We were as green as could be, and it showed.
To put it simply, we lived like the pioneers did as we struggled to slowly build out what we now call our home. Yes, they were some hard times, but we'd do it all over again as the lessons we learned during these days hold more value than the highest form of education that any institute could ever dream of offering. With the values of yesteryear as its guide, this place built us.
As each year passed, we often revisited the idea of farming this land. We experimented with a variety of garden crops and got some egg laying hens, but we never gained momentum. Again, we didn't feel qualified so we went on with our lives.
One day, we decided to stop talking and start doing and slowly began to turn a daydream into reality. With each seed we planted and each egg we collected, a growing sense of purpose began to guide our every step. The farm started to become so much more than a reality... it became a calling.
They say that "God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called" and we are living proof. Although this farm is still in its infancy, our destiny is crystal clear.
